Broadway musicals The Last Ship and The Bridges of Madison County could be heading to the UK.
Following its Broadway closure, it has been confirmed that Sting's musical The Last Ship will receive runs in Norway, Sweden and Finland over the next two years. Broadway.com reports that Sting is also in talks about bringing the show home to the UK where it is set.
The Last Ship will play in Oslo in 2016 before opening in Stockholm and Helsinki in 2017. The show is being translated into each country's language.
Featuring a book by John Logan and Brian Yorkey, The Last Ship is inspired by Sting’s own childhood experiences and his album of the same name. Joe Mantello directed the Broadway production which starred West End Frame Award winner Rachel Tucker who played Elphaba in Wicked for three years in London and is currently appearing in Communicating Doors at the Menier Chocolate Factory.
The Last Ship opened on Broadway in October 2014, closing in January 2015 after 134 performances. Sting joined the cast during the show's run in an attempt to improve ticket sales; however, the show closed when he had to leave due to other commitments.
In other news, composer Jason Robert Brown has revealed that a London production of The Bridges of Madison County is "sneakily" being planned. The musical - which was named the top show of 2014 by West End Frame - ran on Broadway between January and May 2014, playing 137 performances.
Speaking to Broadway World during a recent interview, Robert Brown said: "We are sneakily planning a Bridges of Madison County production in London hopefully in the next couple of years but I am not only not at liberty to provide any details but I actually don't have any more details really! I certainly hope it would come to London and think it would be a great show out there!"
The Bridges of Madison County starred Kelli O'Hara, who is currently appearing in The King and I on Broadway, alongside Steven Pasquale in his Broadway musical theatre debut. Bartlett Sher directed the production which is launching a U.S. tour later this year.
Based on the novel by Robert James Waller, the musical tells the story of an Italian-American housewife named Francesca Johnson and her unlikely four-day love affair with Robert Kincaid, a National Geographic photographer.
