Doctor Zhivago starring Tam Mutu announces Broadway closure

It has been announced that Doctor Zhivago will close on Broadway this Sunday (10th May 2015).

The musical, which stars West End actor Tam Mutu, opened on 21st April 2015. At the time of closing, the musical will have played 26 preview and 23 regular performances at the Broadway Theatre.

Speaking to the New York Times, composer Lucy Simon said: "We've had a lot of bumps. I think we were very brave to do it - it was a big challenge, and some people really love it, which is wonderful."

Producer Anita Waxman said: "We are all incredibly proud of this emotional and important work our amazing creative team has put together. There has been extraordinary dedication and inspiring work from the cast and entire Doctor Zhivago team, both onstage and off. We look forward to this soaring and beautiful new musical having a long future with productions playing not only North America, but also around the world."

Directed by Des McAnuff, the musical also stars Kelli BarrettDoctor Zhivago has book by Michael Weller, music by Lucy Simon and lyrics by Michael Korie and Amy Powers. It is based on the 1957 novel by Boris Pasternak. The cast also includes Tom Hewitt, Paul Nolan and Lora Lee Gayer.

Mutu recently starred in City of Angels at the Donmar Warehouse. As well as previously playing Anatoly in Craig Revel Horwood's production of Chess (Princess of Wales, Toronto), just a few of Mutu's extensive theatre credits include alternate Phantom in Love Never Dies (Adelphi), Longaville in Love’s Labour’s Lost, Anything Goes, South Pacific and The Royal Hunt of the Sun (National Theatre) and Orange Peel (Royal Court) as well as Romeo and Juliet, King Lear (RSC).

Last year Mutu won West End Frame's Best Performance of a Song in a Musical Award for his rendition of 'Stars' in Les Miserables at the Queen's Theatre.
