Cynthia Erivo to star as Celie in The Color Purple on Broadway

It has been confirmed that Cynthia Erivo will star as Celie in The Color Purple on Broadway.

Erivo previously played the role to huge acclaim in the musical's UK premiere at the Menier Chocolate Factory. It is this production, directed by John Doyle, which is transferring to Broadway.

The Color Purple opens at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre on 3rd December 2015 (previews from 9th November).

Oprah Winfrey is producing the production (she also produced the original 2005 Broadway production). Erivo joins the previously announced Oscar winning Jennifer Hudson who is also making her Broadway stage debut as Shug Avery.

The Color Purple features a book by Marsha Norman, lyrics by Brenda Russell, Allee Willis and Stephen Bray and music by Russell and Willis. Based on the novel by Alice Walker, the musical tells the story of Celie, a woman who, through love, finds the strength to triumph over adversity and discovers her voice in the world.

Erivo created the role of Chenice in I Can't Sing (Palladium) and starred as Deloris Van Cartier in the first UK Tour of Sister Act. Her theatre credits also include: all-female Henry IV (Donmar), title role in Dessa Rose (Trafalgar Studios), LIFT (Soho Theatre), The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (Gielgud), The Three Musketeers and the Princess of Spain (Traverse Theatre/English Touring Company) and 24 Hour Musicals (Old Vic).
