A cat and a witch, a witch and a cat… oh, but what about a dog, a bird and a frog? Plus a Welsh dragon of course! Clamber aboard and prepare to be whisked away on a magical broom for an adventure like nothing you’ve ever seen before!

Julia Donaldson once again shows that her stories work wonderfully on stage in this production of Room on the Broom adapted by Tall Stories.

In Tall Stories' usual style, the cat (Emma Maclellan - mine and Mia's favourite character) is dressed in sneakers and shorts with her hair in two buns and she prances about the stage in a cat-like manner trying to help the poor witch (Yvette Clutterbuck) cast her spells and fight off the dragon.

The puppets (designed by Yvonne Stone) bring a creative and imaginative touch to the production and are very cute, especially the dog. David Garrud performs both frog and dog with panache and charm… even managing to ad lib his way out when he uses the wrong voice for the dog, remarking that “I must have a frog in my throat”.

The dragon costume was slightly disappointing, but Daniel Foxsmith tackled both that and the bird admirably with a particularly excellent accent as the bird.

It’s not quite as magical as The Gruffalo but this production still manages to bewitch the children in the audience as they gleefully shout Iggity Ziggity Zaggity Zoom, knowing there’s always some Room on the Broom!
